Cotignac is a nature lover’s paradise, nestled in the heart of Provence Verte with a variety of gentle walks, panoramic hikes and scenic nature trails through forests, vineyards and limestone cliffs. Whether your guests want a short walk to a river cascade or a half-day hike with sweeping views, there’s something for every level of explorer.

CLASSIC COTIGNAC HIKES

LES TROMPINES WATERFALLS TRAIL

This shorter and very scenic walk (approx. 7 – 8 km, ~3½ hours) starts at the base of Cotignac’s famous cliff dwellings and winds up past the Cascades de Trompines. The route climbs towards the hilltop sanctuary of Notre-Dame de Grâce with panoramic views over the valley — perfect for a morning or afternoon adventure.

COTIGNAC HEIGHTS LOOP

A favourite moderate loop trail that climbs up from the village into the rolling hills overlooking Cotignac. On this 12–13 km circular route you’ll enjoy green Provençal countryside, limestone cliffs and views back over the village rooftops. The wooded paths are ideal for spring and autumn hikes and take 3–4 hours to complete.

NOTRE-DAME DE GRÂCE, COTIGNAC

A slightly shorter, moderate trail (6 mi / ~3 km) leading to the hilltop sanctuary of Notre-Dame de Grâce with excellent viewpoints over Cotignac and the surrounding vineyards. This one is ideal for guests who want a rewarding walk without spending a full day out.

FOREST & HILLTOP TRAILS

GROS BESSILLON SUMMIT HIKE

For more experienced walkers, the hike to the foot — or summit — of Gros Bessillon offers one of the most spectacular panoramas in the region. At around 813 m elevation, the peak affords breathtaking views over Provence, the sea and the distant Alps on clear days. The full return hike can take a substantial part of a day and is best suited to those looking for a challenge.

FORÊT DU BESSILLON WALKS

Surrounded by shady forest paths, these routes explore ancient pine and oak woodland above Cotignac. They’re perfect in summer for a cooler, peaceful nature walk through fragrant Provençal forest.

SPECIAL & THEMED ROUTES

PILGRIMAGE PATH: SUR LES TRACES DE LA SAINTE-FAMILLE

This spiritually and culturally rich walking route runs between Notre-Dame de Grâce and the Monastère Saint-Joseph du Bessillon via forest tracks and oratories. Around 9 km long and graded easy to moderate, it’s a lovely mix of landscape, reflection and history.

VILLAGE & COUNTRYSIDE UNESCO-STYLE TRAILS

Several shorter loops and heritage circuits in nearby villages like Villecroze combine easy walking with cultural stops — from fountains and chapels to wildflower fields and traditional Provençal hamlets. These are ideal for more relaxed nature strolls and picnic stops.

HIKES IN GORGES DU VERDON

SENTIER DU BASTIDON

This trail combines canyon views with less crowded ridge paths above the gorge. It sits between La Palud-sur-Verdon and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, offering spectacular panoramas without following the riverbed.

KEY DETAILS

  • Can be done as a shorter out-and-back (~10 km) or a longer loop (~18 km).

  • Views over the Verdon canyon and cliffs — cliffside sections include some exposed parts with cables (best for walkers comfortable with heights).

  • Steep in places, with options to tailor length.

A great choice for walkers who want dramatic vistas without the length of the Blanc-Martel.

BLANC-MARTEL TRAIL - CLASSIC GORGE HIKE

One of the most famous hikes in France — this spectacular trail takes walkers deep into the heart of the Verdon’s limestone canyon. Starting at Chalet de la Maline and finishing at Point Sublime, the trail winds along the river with numerous dramatic viewpoints and cliffside paths.

KEY DETAILS

  • 14 km one-way

  • 6-8 hours duration, depending on pace

  • Difficulty moderate to challenging; it’s long and requires steady walking

  • Features tunnels (bring a charged phone or torch), high canyon walls, and iconic river views

  • It’s a one-way path — most people use the seasonal shuttle service that links the end and start points (April–October) or plan transport accordingly.

Perfect for experienced walkers who want the “classic Verdon canyon experience” — a full day immersed in breathtaking scenery.

GRAND MARGÈS SUMMIT

For walkers after elevation and wide sweeping views, the hike up Grand Margès is rewarding, climbing into the high ridges that overlook the canyon and landscape beyond.

KEY DETAILS

  • Shorter but steep and strenuous — a solid fitness level is advised.

  • Covers a mix of forests, mountain meadows, and lavender fields before reaching the high vantage points.

Ideal for seasoned hikers seeking panoramic views beyond the canyon itself.

GR® ROUTES & LONG-DISTANCE TREKKING

For really ambitious walkers, there are multi-day or long-distance trails in the Verdon Regional Nature Park:

  • GR® 4 – A major long-distance route that passes through the Verdon region, linking through country and canyon landscapes from La Palud-sur-Verdon toward broader Provence.

  • TOUR DES GORGES DU VERDON(GRP®) – A multi-day ring path (~115 km) circumnavigating the entire gorge region with big views, ridge walking, and varied terrain — excellent for seasoned trek lovers.

These are often undertaken as multi-day hikes with accommodations or campsites along the route, and are suitable for those who want to explore the wider Verdon massif.
